Do we have a challenger?
Since the dawn of desktop 3D printers, Thingiverse, the universe of things has been the go to place for models to 3D print.
But for how much longer?
My Mini Factory looks like it wants a slice of that cake. It is still in the early days with only a few models available for download compared to Thingiverse’s numerous parts.
After trying out the site, it is quickly evident that it is nothing like Thingiverse. It has no community. None, what so ever. This may change in the future but only time will tell. However I think it will still be a great place to download quality models for your 3D printing pleasure.
An interesting feature of the site is the ability to request a model. If enough people request the same thing, it will be created and posted on My Mini Factory for free. If not, they will offer you a quote on how much it will cost to CAD up.
When you want to download an object, you have to get the download link emailed to you. These are only live for an hour, which is a bit of a pain. The other issue I found that you can only download about 5 objects a month. If you want to download more, you need to earn credits. This is done by giving feedback on the models and/or pictures of the finished part. Ultimately yes, it is highly likely to result in higher quality and easier to print models but I feel it will put a lot of people off.
Have a look and let us know what you make of it.
